James Cameron’s latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, has become the third highest-grossing movie ever, surpassing Cameron’s own Titanic. The science fiction/fantasy sequel has generated $2.24 billion globally since its release on Dec. 16, making it the third highest-grossing film globally. Only Cameron’s other films, 2009’s original Avatar and Titanic, which he also directed, have made more money globally. Marvel Studios’ 2019 release Avengers: Endgame, is the only non-Cameron-directed film in the top four.
Despite Avatar: The Way of Water’s impressive box office performance, Cameron had expressed concern about the film’s potential profitability due to the high production costs. However, the film’s box office results have proven Cameron’s ability to create successful movies. The Way of Water reached the billion-dollar mark in just 14 days and passed $2 billion at the global box office just over one month after its release.
The impressive box office results come as the film industry continues to grapple with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on moviegoing. Cameron himself had expressed concern about whether the sequel would be able to match the success of the original Avatar amid the pandemic. However, the film has garnered multiple award nominations, including Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.
Avatar: The Way of Water features an all-star cast, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang. The film is a sequel to 2009’s Avatar, which is still the highest-grossing film ever made. With Cameron now directing three of the top four highest-grossing films globally, he remains one of the most successful filmmakers in history.
